 Our Program

Bible:  BJU Press 
We discuss the following biblical topics: sin and salvation, the mind of the Lord, purity, Thanksgiving, Christmas: Jesus' birth, to seek and to save, the exaltation of Christ, a Christian's character, Easter: God's love complete, and Christian friends.  The third graders also memorize weekly NIV Bible verses that coincide with our Bible stories.

English/Language Arts:

Fix-It Grammar - Book 1: The Nose Tree
Students learn grammar skills by finding and correcting errors in daily passages that cumulatively telling a story.  The 3rd graders will complete Book 1: The Nose Tree.  While completing the story, students will apply knowledge skills in context, which will help transfer grammar skills into their own writing.  The following grammar skills taught with The Nose Tree are: indenting, nouns, homophones, ends marks, articles, quotations, pronouns, who-which clauses, action verbs, identifying strong verbs, apostrophes to show ownership,  helping verbs, contractions, adjectives, capitals, adverbs, prepositions, coordinating conjunctions, clauses, and comparative adjectives.  

Writing: IEW (Institute for Excellence in Writing: Teaching Structure and Style in Writing- 2nd Edition)
IEW: The third graders will begin to learn and use writing strategies/methods established by the Institute for Excellence in Writing.  The students will complete the following units in 3rd grade: 1- Note making and Outlines, 2-Summarizing from Notes, 3- Summarizing Narrative Stories, 4-Summarizing a Reference, 5-Writing from Pictures, and 7-Creative Writing.

Students will also learn what a paragraph is,  important research skills, and memorize a speech for their wax museum character in May.  

Handwriting: 
We review cursive that was learned in 2nd grade with teacher created worksheets and implementing cursive writing into daily assignments.

Reading:  
Bob Jones, the Accelerated Reading program, and 3 literature units
We use the Bob Jones readers to focus on reading skills and comprehension for the first semester.  During the second semester, we focus on three literature units.  Dictionary skills and sentence writing are incorporated into The Mouse and the Motorcycle. The Iditarod is taught in conjunction with the novel Stone Fox. And to wrap up the school year we read The Case of the Dognapped Cat.  We also compare and contrast 2 novels with the movies. Students will create an in-class "published" book.

Spelling: BJU Press curriculum for the spelling words
We use a variety of teacher-created spelling activities to learn 20 spelling words every week. 
 
Mathematics: BJU Press
BJU Press focuses on addition and subtraction facts, place value to 1,000,000,  addition and subtraction up to 5 digit numbers, representing and interpreting data with graphs,  multiplication and division for 1 to 12, fractions, calendars and telling time, elapsed time, measurement - customary and metric, geometry, money, and decimals

Science:  ACSI Purposeful Design
Purposeful Design emphasizes the following units:
1- Life Science: ecosystems, plant life and variety, 
2- Physical Science: matter, force and motion, electricity, magnets
3- Earth Science and Space: earth's surface (rocks and soils), changes in the earth's surface (volcanoes, earthquakes, tsunamis, landforms, erosion), stars and constellations
4- Body Systems: nervous systems, musculoskeletal system, and health

Social Studies: Masterbooks Curriculum 
Our social studies curriculum has been developed by using Masterbooks Curriculum to discuss the American Revolution, the Constitution, the Declaration of Independence and Bill of Rights, the French government and revolution, western expansion with pioneers,  the Texas/Mexico War (Alamo), the Civil War, African American heroes/heroines with a focus on Martin Luther King Jr., Booker T. Washington, George Washington Carver, Harriet Tubman, and early travel using steamboats and railroads. We also study U.S. regions, physical maps, and the memorization of the 7 continents, 4 oceans, and the location of all 50 states.

​Enrichment Classes: 
Students attend weekly Chapel, Art, Computer, Music, and Library classes one time per week and P.E. two times per week.
